When it comes to colds, I’m always trying natural homemade recipes because they work pretty well; and we use medication only when absolutely necessary. My Cold Fighting Tonic Recipe is my go-to when anyone in my house has cold symptoms. It works pretty well and it’s even tasty!

But, not all colds are the same and some come with pretty intense coughing spells. While my tonic helps with coughs, sometimes you need something with soothing properties that will coat your throat.

The problem with coughing is that they seem to linger on and on. Actually, the average duration of a cold is almost 3 weeks. This homemade homemade cough syrup will help soothe your irritated throat and ease your cough.

Our coughs usually last for about a week and I believe it’s because this syrup is so effective, so why not give it a try?

Homemade Cough Syrup Recipe (1)

If you have a chronic cough or you’re barely breathing from coughing so much, you need to see a doctor first.

I like to take this syrup first thing in the morning, before I eat or drink any water. I usually wait around 10 minutes before I ingest anything else after taking this syrup. You can use it as much as needed throughout the day. We usually take 1 to 2 teaspoons 3 to 5 times a day, but on the most intense days I’ve taken it every 2-3 hours.

About the ingredients:

The ingredients in this syrup are fantastic at soothing a sore throat and treating a cough.

Combining honey and lemon is a very traditional way to treat a cough and they are used around the world to do so. The best honey to use for this is buckwheat honey because it helps to reduce throat irritation, supports your immune systems, is filled with antioxidants and also acts as a cough suppressant. Lemons are full of vitamin C, which is known to give the immune system a boost.

Ginger is another important component as ginger is anti-inflammatory and a natural painkiller – which will help sooth the irritation and discomfort of a sore throat. Ginger can also provide some soothing relief if you are having any digestive issues.

Honey, lemon, ginger, cinnamon, and coconut oil all have antibacterial, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties. These properties are going to help you fight off whatever bug might be causing your cough.

Instructions:

To make this syrup, you will need a small bowl or jar for mixing. Add 3 tablespoons of honey to your jar.

Measure 2 tablespoons of coconut oil into the jar. If your coconut oil is too solid, you will need to melt it. You can place on a warm surface in your home, like on top of your stove, or melt it in the microwave.

Make sure you don’t heat up the oil, just make sure you use enough heat for the oil to melt but not to actually heat up.

Squeeze the juice from half of a large lemon into the mixture. Be careful to watch for and remove any seeds!

Grate a ½ teaspoon of fresh ginger into the jar and add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon to your cough syrup mix.

Stir the mixture well to combine all of the ingredients. You may need to use a small whisk.

Pour in 1 to 2 tablespoons of water to thin the mixture out a bit. Start with 1 tablespoon and add more as needed. You do not want the mixture to be too thin, but it should flow easily from the spoon.

Take 1 to 2 teaspoons of the homemade cough syrup 3-5 times a day. Try not to drink or eat anything else for about 10 minutes after taking the syrup.
