Easy Frozen Butterbeer Recipe (1)

By now, I am sure you can tell my family and I are HUGE Harry Potter fans. We’ve read the Harry Potter Books and watched all the movies. We’ve even recreated some of the tasty treats from the Harry Potter series. They’re always fun to make (and eat) especially when we’re having a party or a Harry Potter marathon.

Another one of our favorite things to do is to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Of course, no trip would be complete without trying Harry’s favorite drink, butterbeer.

We’ve tried them all, from the traditional cold butterbeer to hot butterbeer and even butterbeer ice cream (a can’t miss!). On our last visit, we thought we’d give the frozen version of butterbeer a try!

It definitely didn’t disappoint and it was the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer day. In fact, we liked it so much that we decided that we wanted to enjoy a little bit of that magic at home…hence, our own copycat frozen butterbeer recipe.

Even though the recipe at Universal is super top secret, once you’ve tasted that first delicious sip, I think you’ll agree this copycat version is every bit as good!

What is Butterbeer?

If you’re new to the Harry Potter world, you may be wondering what butterbeer is. This butterscotch flavored drink is a popular beverage that was made famous in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. In fact, it’s the drink of choice for Harry and his friends.

If you visit one of the Wizarding World theme parks, there are lots of variations, including cold butterbeer, hot butterbeer, butterbeer ice cream and of course, frozen butterbeer. Just head to the Three Broomsticks, Hog’s Head, The Leaky Cauldronor one of the butterbeer street carts.

While the Universal version has a little more of a frothy, foamy topping, we love the contrast of the ice cream with the slushy cream soda! However, you can always substitute whipped cream if you like.

What Does Butterbeer Taste Like?

While the book version of butterbeer tastes “a little bit like less sickly butterscotch” (whatever less sickly means), our frozen drink has a sweet butterscotch flavor that may or may not be considered “less sickly”.

Does Butterbeer Have Alcohol In It?

While the butterbeer in the books does contain a very small amount of alcohol. However, in the real world, regular butterbeer is an alcohol-free, kid-friendly drink.

If you’d like to make an adult version of this sweet treat, you can add a little bit of vanilla vodka or butterscotch schnapps to the blender with the butterscotch syrup and frozen cream soda cubes. Blend away and enjoy!
