August grew his hair long because he wanted to hide his face from others.

This is a theme throughout the movie. The words "stupid", "idiot", and "crap" are heard. Bully says "Jesus". The word "fart" is said; also, at a science fair, there is an exhibit titled "How Bad Do Farts Smell?"

Lib burns down Anna's home, tells the council the girl has died, and then meets up with Will and Anna. At the very end, the movie returns to the framing device of the modern set. The last scene shows Lib, Will, and Anna (now Nan) on a ship bound for Australia.

The disability that Auggie has in the novel and movie is called Treacher Collins syndrome. This is a rare genetic condition that affects the way a child's face develops, especially the cheekbones, jaws, ears, and eyelids.

On Halloween, Jack is caught laughing at Auggie with Julian and saying, "if I looked like him, seriously, I think that I'd kill myself" (Palacio). We later learn that Jack does not know why he says this, but it appears that he is caught up in trying to fit in with the popular group and wants to impress Julian.

Julian is the antagonist of the book and is August's bully. Despite the fact that Julian is a known bully among the student body, teachers seem less aware of his bad behavior, as evidenced by Mr. Tushman inviting Julian to show August around the school before the school year starts.

Julian was afraid of Auggie, but he didn't know quite how to articulate it. He didn't get the help he needed. That's at the root of his hostility.

Through Facebook messages, Jack apologizes to Auggie, and the boys are friends again. Julian's mother tells Mr. Tushman that Auggie doesn't belong at Beecher Prep, but Mr. Tushman disagrees.
