Playoff picture still a cluster.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (16-27 overall, 8-14 GLIAC) split a home conference doubleheader with Davenport University (14-28 overall, 6-14 GLIAC) Wednesday afternoon at Gary L. Bryce Field. WSU won the opener 7-4, while DU held on for a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

Game 1

The visiting Panthers struck first in the opener with a run in the top of the first. Back-to-back singles by Becca Daoust and Riley Hasseld started the frame and a one-out hit by pitch loaded the bases. Savanna Disbrow's flied out to right field to plate Daoust, but Alexis Gills was thrown out trying to advance to second.

The Warriors tallied two runs in the bottom of the second after the first two batters were retired. Graduate student Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) had a single to right field, and scored on a double by freshman Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.). Long then scored the go-ahead run on a single by sophom*ore Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).

Wayne State added a run in the third as freshman Logan Forman (Brantford, Ont.) had a one-out single to left. She advanced to third as senior Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) reached on a throwing error on her sacrifice bunt. Junior Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) plated Forman with a sacrifice fly.

WSU extended its advantage with four unearned runs in the fifth. Miller and Ruczynski had consecutive two-out singles, before Hodder reached on a throwing error. Long, who enter the contest with three RBI on the season, laced the first pitch see saw into right center for a three-run double. Hool followed with a double to plate Long with the Warriors seventh run.

In the top of the seventh, the Panthers made it interesting scoring three times on four straight hits to start the frame. After the two-run double by Disbrow, sophom*ore Sasha Buckberger (Oakville, Ont.) retired three consecutive batters on strikeouts after allowing a walk to notch her first collegiate save.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (6-12) allowed four earned runs on nine hits in six-plus innings. She struck out four and walked five. Buckberger faced four batters striking out three and walking one.

Kelsey Byers (2-6) surrendered seven runs (two earned) on 11 hits in 4.2 innings. She struck out two and did not walk a batter. Alayna Pinkelman retired all four batters she faced, including three on strikes.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Josephson had three hits, while Long had two hits and a career-high four RBI. Maddie Hool contributed two hits and two RBI.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Hasseld went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Disbrow had two hits and drove in three.

Game 2 Recap

In similar fashion to game one, Davenport scored in the top of the first. Daoust had a leadoff infield single before senior Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) retired the next two batters. DU's Alexis Gills hit a 3-1 offering over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead for the visitors.

After allowing back-to-back walks to start the second inning, Bonk retired the next 11 Panthers before Daoust had a bunt single with two outs in the fifth.

Maddie Hool led off the bottom of the fifth with a double to left. She moved to third on a deep fly out to left by Miller, then scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 2-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, Hodder worked a five-pitch walk to start the frame. Bonk's sacrifice bunt moved pinch-runner Lauren Fritz (Commerce, Mich. Waterford Kettering (Oakland CC)) to second. Fritz advanced to third on a fly out by Hool, before a ground out ended the contest with the tying run on third.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk (6-12) allowed two earned runs on five hits in seven innings. She struck out six and walked three.

Hailey Whisman (8-9) limited WSU to one earned run on five hits in seven innings. She struck out two and walked three.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Hodder went 1-for-1 with two walks.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Daoust went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Gills smacked a two-run home run.

UP NEXT

Wayne State will conclude the regular season on Friday with a GLIAC doubleheader against Ferris State. Senior Day ceremonies start at 3:10 p.m. with first pitch at 3:30 p.m.

GLIAC Playoff Picture

With just two dates (Friday and Saturday) remaining on the GLIAC schedule for everyone but the Warriors and Saginaw Valley State, the league tournament playoff picture is still a cluster. The top four teams (Grand Valley State 13-7, SVSU 14-8, Purdue Northwest 12-8, Ferris State 11-9) have a clinched a spot in the conference post-season with Parkside (8-12 GLIAC), WSU and DU battling for the final two spots. The Warriors went 2-2 in the regular season against both the Rangers and the Panthers with those two squads meeting Friday in Kenosha, Wis., while Wayne State entertains FSU on Friday. On Saturday, Parkside is at Grand Valley State, while Davenport hosts Purdue Northwest to conclude the regular season on Saturday.
