Game Recap: Softball | | Ace Hunt
ST. MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. –It was a special day on the St. Mary-of-the-Woods campus as the Pomeroy softball team recorded a Senior Day doubleheader sweep of visiting IU-Columbus (IUPUC) on Saturday at the SMWC Softball Field. The Pomeroys won the first game 7-0 and came back with a 5-0 win in the nightcap.
SMWC improved to 29-13 (22-6 RSC) while IUPUC falls to 10-24 (8-18 RSC).
Five seniors were honored including Jaselyn Conn, Lauren Kavanaugh, Lyric Krause, Summer Rocha and Katrina Strow. Conn earned a degree in K-6 Elementary Education and Mild Intervention and is a member of the SMWC Master of Leadership Development Program. She was a 2021 USCAA Second Team All-American and a four-time NFCA Academic All-American. Kavanaugh is an accounting major and plans to begin preparations for the CPA exam. Krause is the 2023 River States Conference Bill Melton Character Award winner as the top female Champion of Character representative among all sports in the conference. She was a Second Team USCAA All-American in 2022. Krause is a 2023 biology graduate and is working on a Master's Degree in Leadership Development.
Rocha is a four-time NFCA Academic All-American and a two-time USCAA All-Academic Team selection and a three-time honoree on the SMWC Dean's List. She earned first team All-American honors from the USCAA in 2021 and first team All-River States Conference in 2022. Rocha is a criminology major with a pre-law minor as well as a business administration school major. Strow is a two-time team captain and a two-time RSC Champion of Character selection as well as a four-time NFCA Academic All-American. She is a Saint Mother Theordore Guerin Scholar and was named the 2023 Student Senator of the Year. She is an exercise science major at SMWC.
Jasmine Kinzer got the scoring going in the first inning with a solo home run for the 1-0 advantage. In the fourth inning, Conn stole third base and then came home on a error to stretch the advantage out to 2-0. Kinzer would strike again as part of a five-run bottom of the fifth inning when she doubled to drive in both Naveah Pender and Strow to make it 4-0. Krause doubled to drive in Annika Hannigan and Conn would get credit for a two RBI double to send home Abby Broughton and Kinzer for the 7-0 victory.
Kinzer finished the game 2-of-3 at the dish with two runs scored and three runs driven in while Conn posted a 2-of-3 effort at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Abbi Henderson was 2-of-3 batting in the contest. Conn added two stolen bases and Henderson had the other.
Rocha picked up the victory inside the circle by going the distance – a full seven innings allowing six hits with a strike out in recording the shutout.
In the second game, Pender would record a three RBI double to clear the bases and bring home Henderson, Fitzwater and Ruby Gray. Hannigan would then double to drive home Pender for the 4-0 advantage. In the fourth inning, Kavanaugh singled to drive in Gray to stretch the lead out to 5-0.
Pender drove in three runs in the contest while Gray was a perfect 2-of-2 at the plate. Fitzwater finished with a complete game going all seven innings and allowing six hits with a pair of strike outs.
The Pomeroys have one more conference weekend remaining on the regular season schedule as they travel to Oakland City on Friday, April 26 for a doubleheader beginning at 4 pm (ET) and then travel to Brescia (Ky.) for the regular season finale on Saturday, April 27 beginningat 3 pm (ET).
