Badgers beat Minnesota in 3-0 game 1, fall 3-7 in game 2

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. –The Wisconsin softball team (16-24, 5-9) added another chapter to the program's history on Wednesday as Tessa Magnanimo pitched a no-hitter as part of a doubleheader split at Minnesota. Magnamino'sgem marked the12th no-hitter in program history and helped the Badgers to a 3-0 win in game one. The Gophers would earn the equalizer with a 7-3 win in game two.

GAME ONE

Minnesota came into the day as one of the top-hitting teams in the conference, with a .297 team average, and scoring 6.4 runs per game.

Tessa Magnanimo was dealt with facing the team in game one of the series. After the senior walked the second batter of the game, Magnanimo pitched one of the best games in program history. She retired the next 20 batters in a row to secure the win, as well as the no-hitter.

Magnanimo went 7.0 innings, allowing no hits, one walk, and six strikeouts. The shutout took just 83 pitches to complete. She struck out two batters in the first inning, as well as the last one she faced to secure the no-hitter. Her record improved to 9-11.

The defense supported Magnanimo throughout. Wisconsin committed no errors in the game and provided several strong defensive plays, the best of them coming from Skylar Sirdashney. With one out in the top of the seventh, Sirdashney dove for a ball that was scorched off the bat, and caught the liner near the ground.

The Badger bats helped their starter by scoring early. After a single and hit-by-pitch brought two runners on in the top of the third, Hilary Blomberg cleared the bases with a two-RBI double that gave Wisconsin the 2-0 lead.

By the looks of it, Blomberg had another two-RBI hit in the fifth inning of the game as well. Upon further review, Blomberg's would-be triple was nullified after the runner on second had left the base before the pitcher released the ball on the pitch.

This same base-running mistake happened again in the seventh inning, meaning there was no one on base for Alivia Bark's double. Bark would score later that inning to make the final score 3-0.

Batting Cleanup

  • This was the 12th no-hitter in program history, and the first in Magnanimo's career. The last Badger no-hitter came last season on April 17, 2023, when Maddie Schwartz no-hit Purdue. This was also the fourth game in program history where only one baserunner was allowed in the game.
  • Alivia Barkwent 2-for-3, with a double, and a run scored.
  • Hilary Blomberg went 1-for-3 with a two-RBI double.
  • This was the first Wisconsin victory against the Gophers in Minneapolis since 2016.

GAME 2

Contrasting game one, Minnesota hit two straight doubles off of starter Shelby Jacobson, making the score 1-0 after the first inning. The Gophers extended their lead in the second inning, capitalizing on a hit and a couple of free passes with a sac fly, as well as a fielder's choice.

Wisconsin wouldn't retaliate until the fourth, where they showed off speed to earn three runs. The first came off a Brooke Kuffel single to left field that just made it past the infield, where Grace O'Brien hustled around the bases to score from second. The second run came from a dropped third strike, in which the runner on third, Kate Linkletter, raced home after the catcher made the throw to first. The final run came from an Alivia Bark sacrifice bunt, scoring Kuffel from third.

Minnesota quickly took the lead back though in the next frame. After the first two runners reached base, Jess Oakland, who boasts the second most home runs in the conference, hit a three-run blast to give the Gophers a 6-3 lead, one they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.

Jacobson was pulled from the game in the sixth after giving up an RBI walk in the fifth. She took the loss, now 2-11 on the season, going 5.0 innings, allowing six earned runs and seven walks. Hilary Blomberg pitched 1.0 innings in relief, allowing one hit, and striking out one batter.

Batting Cleanup

  • Peyton Bannon went 2-for-3 at the plate. She now has three multi-hit performances in her last four games.
  • Hilary Blomberg recorded a hit at the plate and a strikeout on the mound. She is the only Badger this season to accomplish this feat.

Up Next:The Badgers will head back home to play Penn State in a Friday-Saturday-Sunday series. The games can be watched on Big Ten Plus, with the first at 5 p.m. (CT) on April 19.
