BMW has announced that the 2023 X4 has been updated alongside its twin, the X3, which shares much of its DNA. Although the two models are similar in terms of base, performance and technology features, the X4 is the sportier sister thanks to its coupe-like exterior that is lower and wider than the X3. For 2023, the BMW X4 gets new design, technology upgrades and a mild hybrid system for the M40i and performance-focused M models.
The BMW X4 2023 undergoes design changes front and rear, including a new grille design, an updated bumper, headlights and taillights. The X4 features BMW’s signature aluminum grille kidney grille that has grown larger with the update. While expanding the grille, the X4’s LED headlights have shrunk 0.4 inches thinner, and a redesigned front bumper with vertical air intakes completes the facelift.
The rear of the BMW X4 has been updated with redesigned full LED taillights with integrated horizontal turn signal bars, vertical air intakes arranged in a triangular design, and a new sporty exhaust rim.

The 382-hp BMW X4 M40i gets a 48-volt mild-hybrid system for 2023, which helps restore brake power. When the throttle is released, the alternator converts the kinetic energy into electricity which is stored in the battery. The energy from the 48-volt battery is then used to supply the car’s electric-powered functions and generate additional thrust. The 48V starter alternator supports the combustion engine for improved efficiency and produces up to 11 HP for better acceleration.
The mild-hybrid system also helps improve the comfort of the M40i’s stop-and-go system, according to BMW, thanks to vibration reduction. This system allows the combustion engine to be shut down when the vehicle speed drops below 9 mph, and the slip function allows the engine to shut down completely between 15-99 mph.
The BMW X4 M and X4 M are performance SUV models. With a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine, the current 2022 BMW X4 M generates 473 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque, while the M Competition boosts horsepower to 503 and also delivers 442 lb-ft of torque. The newly tuned engine for 2023 increases torque output to 457 lb-ft in the X4 M and 479 lb-ft in the X4 M Competition.
The increase in torque production reduces the 0-60 mph acceleration time for the X4 from 4.1 seconds to 3.9 seconds and from 4.0 seconds to 3.7 seconds for the Competition M. The top speed for this model is 155 mph, which increases to 177 MPH when the optional M Driver package is added.
Price And Release Date
The 2023 BMW X4 xDrive30i is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 248 horsepower, and the X4 M40i gets a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 382 horsepower. Under the hood of the X4 M is a 473-hp six-cylinder, while the X4 M tops the existing competition with a 503-hp six-cylinder. The X4 xDrive30i, X4 M40i and X4 M all come standard with all-wheel drive.
Production of the BMW X4 2023 begins in August and late summer for the X4 M, with dealer arrival scheduled for September. The starting price for each model is listed below and includes a $955 destination fee.
